Cheque Truncation System in India: How CTS Benefits To Banks & Customer?

New RBI guidelines for Cheque Truncation  - 1st Jan 2013

There is going to be a big change in how the Banks function come Jan 1st 2013. And all this begins with the cheque book and cheque leaves. RBI has brought forth new rules stating that the Cheque Truncation System or CTS 2010 will come into effect and will be followed by all banks across the country. All banks should use cheques that have subscribed to the rules under CTS guidelines.

Current Indian Population: 1,241,491,960 – 2011 (1.22 billion.)
There are 26 Nationalized Banks, 23 Private Sector Banks and 21 foreign banks.

  • All Scheduled Commercial Banks          – 166
  • Regional Rural Banks – 88
  • Other scheduled commercial banks – 78
  • Non-Scheduled Commercial Banks – 5

What is Cheque Truncation System [CTS] ?

Well, to make it simple it is a new and improved structure for cheques. It’s a set of new guidelines that will alter the way cheques are processed and cleared by the banks. Today what is happening is that the cheques are sent directly to the other banks for clearance. However, with the new Cheque Truncation System rules, banks will have to send only the digital version of the cheques to the other recipient banks. The clearance will then happen instantly or within a short duration of time.

Is CTS Legal?

With amendments in the Sections 6 and 1(4), coupled with the introduction of 81 A to the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881, truncation of cheques is now legalized.

Benefits to Banks and Customer

•         With the CTS banks can do faster clearing cycle. For example if you deposit cheque of your client you can withdraw money for the same on the same day. Banks can reduce their Turnaround time (TAT) and thus can enhance customer service and reduces complaint and less fraudulent cases.

•         In the current system, banks transport all the cheques from all branches countrywide to automated clearing house (ACH) for processing. Thus with the introduction of CTS, only images will be taken and sent electronically to ACH. Thus it will improve the bank operational efficiency and give boost to bottom line as the whole process of clearing cheque is a huge cost and a low revenue activity.

•         With CTS banks can have centralized image archival system which reduces the manual tasks and also leads to reduction in human error.

•         Customers can do Real time tracking. Reconciliation of accounts will be much easier for all customers and it’s very secure as compared to current system. All types of cheques can be accessible for clearing as it will work in the same traditional system.

How Cheque Truncation System Work?

How Cheque Truncation System Work?

Some key features of CTS cheques would be

  • The cheque leaf will have the phrase “please sign above this line” at the bottom right corner.
  • All the CTS 2010 cheques will bear a watermark “CTS INDIA” that can be seen against the light
  • A bank logo will be present on the cheque along with an Ultra Violet ink that will be visible under UV Scanners.
  • The CTS 2010 enabled cheques will have no leeway for any adjustments or alterations. If any changes are to be made, the cheque needs to be cancelled and a new one issued in its place.
  • The cheques will bear the words “payable at par at all branches of the bank in India” at the bottom on all the leaves
  • There will be an MICR and IFSC code on the cheque
  • The cheque needs to be signed with darker ink so it is visible under scanning.

Don’t worry, these are not complicated. If you read through them, you will understand it is only to make digital processing easier. And once the CTS 2010 cheques arrive, the entire banking system will change. The cheque clearance process will happen much smoother and faster. And more importantly, banks will also be going green, saving on paper.

Banks are slowly sending out letters to their customers about the new cheque format, and so before the end of the year, make sure to collect unused cheques and get them exchanged with the banks. Else, you will be stranded without a document for exchange.

What should you do?

1. Replace your Post Dated Cheques- if you have issued any post dated cheques, time to call them back in and reissue new ones. Else, the cheque will bounce and you will end up paying penalty.

2. Deposit any Old Cheques right away- cash in on all the cheques that you have, and don’t wait for time to pass.

3. Contact your bank and check with them on the new cheques and how to proceed with the existing cheque leaves with you.

How banks can participate in CTS?

There are two ways in which banks can participate

Direct Membership: Banks can take part as direct member provided they have a settlement account with settlement bank in order to place a necessary infrastructure for participating in CTS.

Indirect Membership: Banks may become sub-members / indirect members of the direct members by using the infrastructure and / or settlement services of the direct members.

Is The Infrastructure Requirement For Participating in CTS Same For All Banks?

The infrastructures necessary for banks’ to participate in CTS are connected from the bank’s gateway to the Clearing House, thus prescribed hardware and software is required for the CTS application.

RBI provides member banks with the CHI (software). Banks need to get hardware and other software such as operating system; database and a bouquet of third party software for the CHI. They also need to procure the application software for their capture systems.

The hardware requirement / sizing are based on the volume of cheques processed by banks. Based on the volume the CHI is categorised into four types and the hardware requirement is different for each category.

Windows 8 with Its Built In Virus Protection: Convenience for Users And Hackers Alike

Even though Windows 8 is yet to be released, it is still a subject of great interest for both the heroes and the villains of the computer security world. The software colossus Microsoft has decided to package the new operating system, Windows 8, with a built in anti-virus program is causing blast waves within the entire tech community generally and the security industry particularly. This new operating system which has release in 2012 and is coupled with Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE), an antivirus software package meant to protect computers from spyware, malware and Trojans while including parental controls and a firewall. The news was announced by Microsoft the same day as the company released a preview of Windows 8 to the developers.

Pros and Cons

The idea of packing Windows 8 with antivirus program MSE has both bright and dark sides. According to the computer security firm Sophos’s Graham Cluley, it could be good news and bad news because as a general rule of thumb anything that enables an average user to have updated antivirus protection generally has positive consequences, however, it could also be misleading for such users as they might mistake the this particular software package for a complete protection making the users feel fully secure. This creates a huge incentive for attackers to focus on finding cracks and holes in this antivirus software. Cluley adds that as soon as Windows 8 will be released the odds are that hackers will be determined on creating malware meant specifically penetrate through and elude the Microsoft Security Essentials.

One savior against an army of attackers

ZDNet’s Adrian Kingsley-Hughes also agrees in this regard and adds that a plausible disadvantage of having one antivirus program with the multitude of Windows installations is that it would lead to a security monoculture whereby most of the computers will be protected by one application. All the attacker needs to do in such a scenario is to target that single application that would mean hitting a homerun for such hackers. Other security companies and experts have also contributed to the same view point, for instance; Windows 8’s built in protection does not make much of a difference, according to Symantec, while some experts think of it as a last resort or a safety net for those users who do not install antivirus software on their own.

Another security flaw

The Beta testing of this new version of Microsoft’s OS has yielded shocking results. There was a yawing security vulnerability discovered as the Adobe Flash Player that has been built into the new Internet Explorer 10, which is the default browser for the new OS, lacks basic security patches. Now only Windows can patch the Flash player updates to Internet Explorer 10 as the player is baked into the browser rather than serving as a third party plug in. Nonetheless, Windows 8 can still do really well in the tech universe by providing an overarching platform that stretches itself across all computing devices, like smart phones, tablet PCs, laptops and desktops. But if it lacks in terms of defenses then it will become equally convenient to those with malign inclinations in terms of developing computer spy software and mobile phone spy software and apps, with the common denominator being one uniform platform.

Nintendo’s New Home Entertainment System – Launches Wii U GamePad Controller

New Nintendo Wii

New Nintendo Wii

Last week we talk much about android games and other gaming technology. We are always so curious about latest product launches and this week too we bring for you another product launch by Nintendo one week back.

Ah, the same old Nintendo but now in a whole new avatar, the Wii U is here. The console, and the   handheld GamePad are just as good, thanks to the Broadcom’s involvement and making sure it provided  high Wi-Fi performance.

The Wii U goes beyond the earlier Nintendo systems with the GamePad, using which one can control Wii games displayed on a TV set or it can also act as a standalone gaming device with an exclusive display option.  With new changes and development in the controller capabilities, Nintendo has bumped up their wireless service on this system. Using Wi-Fi connection between the controller and console, Nintendo is introducing a new concept, one that replaces the Bluetooth. This new Nintendo’s platform is all set to hit the U.S. market on Sunday.  The very first console from Nintendo and the Wii came out in 2006.

Using the new Wii U, users can stream videos between the GamePad and the Wii console directly, without using any access point with just the Wi-Fi Direct standard.

Nintendo and Broadcom have also built several additional features on top of Wi-Fi Direct.

  1. The console has 2 separate Wi-Fi chips: one that is used to communicate with the local Wi-Fi router, while the other one is meant for communication with the GamePad only.
  2. The Wii console-to-GamePad link works over the 5GHz band, the preset of Wi-Fi frequencies with almost all the channels and all this with minimum interference.  For the console to speak to the home router, it can use either the 5GHz or the other available band- 2.4GHz.  However,  in order to avoid any interference, the Wii console-to-router connection can also be patched by force to the 2.4GHz band,
  3. Price

$299.99 for Basic Set / $349.99 for Deluxe Set

Looks like Wii U is here to stay!

7 Tech Tools That Help Older People Stay Active | Seniors and Technology

One of the keys to a long, happy, and productive life is staying active. Yet, staying active is a lot easier and less painful when you’re 20 or 30 than it is when you’re 60 or 70. Staying active is an essential part of staying healthy as a senior, yet with age comes a number of significant challenges.
Today, technology is offering seniors new ways to stay active and keep on top of their physical fitness. Let’s take a look at several of these technologies, and see just how elder are using them to stay active:

  1. Cell phones designed for seniors. For seniors – who aren’t likely to drop their land line service any time soon, cell phones are all about mobility. Yet, most cell phones aren’t designed with seniors in mind. Hence, seniors get frustrated trying to use these phones, and may even stay in because of it. However, phones like the Samsung Galaxy Note are specifically designed with these users in mind. The screen is bigger than an ordinary phone, and features touch-screen buttons that are large enough and forgiving enough for occasionally-shaky hands to use. It’s also a full-fledged smartphone, so seniors who are interested in staying connected while they’re away from home can do so.
  2. Heart rate monitor watches. There are a number of these devices on the market today. Some simply monitor your heart rate, displaying it when you push a button. Others are more advanced, and record your heart rate information throughout the day and then sync that data with your computer. Some even feature GPS functionality, tracking where and when the user travels. Heart rate monitor watches are a great solution for active seniors who are engaging in an exercise or other physical training program, so that they can keep in touch with how they’re doing at any given moment.
  3. Video games. When you think about seniors, you probably don’t think about video games right away. However, as the baby boomer population ages, it’s becoming more and more common to see Wii or Xbox 360 Kinect devices in seniors’ homes. These gaming consoles feature exercise activities that seniors can do at home. Even many of the games are physically engaging, and seniors can enjoy an afternoon playing Wii Bowling with their grandchildren, for example.
  4. Mobility technology. Today’s seniors, even those with mobility-related health concerns, are more active than ever. Advances in automotive technology for people with disabilities, as well as personal mobility aids are making it easier and easier for seniors to get from point A to point B.
  5. Integrated technologies. One of the big advances in exercise and activity technology that we’re seeing today – and it’s not just with seniors – is integrated technologies. For example, an online exercise tracker that interfaces with a cell phone’s GPS chip to track the number of miles someone walked in a given day, combined with a heart monitor that lets you know your heart rate at every given point. Another example of integrated technology would include swimmer’s goggles that have a built-in Bluetooth headset. Seniors and others are seeing a huge trend in the direction of integration today.
  6. Social networks. Social networking sites offer more opportunities for seniors to get involved with friends and family than ever before. Not only that, it gives seniors an opportunity to interact with others who are their own age, and to discuss issues important to them. As a natural byproduct of this kind of connectivity, it’s not uncommon to see the formation of etball teams being formed.
  7. Smartphone apps. Today’s seniors hsenior biking or hiking groups, new golf partnerships, or even local senior baskave access to more information and advice at their fingertips than ever before. There are apps for smartphones that help seniors make more heart-healthy eating choices. There are apps that can track their physical activity, and apps that can show them how to do certain exercises specifically designed for seniors.

Technology, in itself, isn’t pro- or anti-fitness. The fact of the matter is that there are just as many people in the United States with health problems due to spending too much time with technology like televisions or computers as there are who benefit from technology. It really just comes down to how you’re using that technology. If you have a loved one who’s getting up there in years, consider putting some of these technologies to work to help them stay active today.

How To Design A Website That Sells | Tips To Increase Clicks On Your Site

The amount of times a person clicks on a website is supposed to be important. There is an idea that the more times a person clicks on a website that the more likely they are to leave it. Others contend that people are more likely to leave if their clicks do not lead to a successful conclusion.

Many people say that the quality of the click counts more than the amount of clicks a person gets.

 1 – Three clicks

The three-click rule states that if a user cannot get their desired information by the time they have clicked three clicks that they will leave the site. It is a good rule of thumb, although it may be a little simplified. Overall however you should take the advice if you are over advertising on your website.

For example, if a person has to click the “x” to close your pop up, then click your auto-start video to stop it from playing, then click a link to move down the page to get their info-they will probably press back and leave your page. The same goes for websites that put list of items on different click-pages. Even if the clickable pages are in a gallery it is still too much trouble for all but the most bored and boring people.

2 – Readability and white space

If your website does not have at least 50% of the page space as white space (empty) space then it will become hard to read. There are people who will tell you that 75% is required for an easy to read page. You may hop up and down and say that there are many mainstream websites that cram their pages with products, and that there is not space on the page.

This may be true, but if you look at their amount of actual readable text in comparison to space that is not readable text (graphics, images, prices, etc) then you will see that their page actually has a lot of space between the texts. The lines you leave after a paragraph also count as white space.

3 – Do not use a pop up on your website

They add to the amount of clicks that your user needs to do and are annoying. Popups will always increase your bounce rate and will reduce the amount of people who return to read your website.

4 – Do not use an auto-start video

These are the most annoying things on the web at the moment. Nobody on the planet wants to see a video advert that starts up when they first open a web page. They are horrible, annoying and the reason why so many websites lose thousands of viewers (forever).

5 – Test any new layout

You should test any of your layouts to be sure that people will use and stay on your site. If you are going to use a brand new and innovative layout, you need to test it rigorously. You need to test it for bugs, usability, practically and its potential intimidation factor/bounce bait factor.

Don’t forget that if you are using a layout that is not commonly seen then you may experience bugs and problems that are not commonly seen on other sites – therefore they are unexpected. You need to rigorously test your new layout for bugs. You need to test the usability of your site. Does it load fast enough and it is user friendly. If it is a new layout then it needs to be blindingly obvious on how to use it, otherwise people will become confused. Is the layout practical?

Are you taking the user on a long route for a small reward?

Finally, do not forget that if something is new then it will intimidate people. You may need to lead them by the hand on the first few landing pages until they are used to the way your website works.
